CITB CPCS CAA routes of entry
Route 1: To achieve a red trained operator card.
This route is for a candidate with no mobile plant experience. Duration of training depends on the type of plant. One day will be allocated to take the CPCS testing programme, consisting of theory and practical elements. Companies who pay levy to CITB may be eligible for grant for training and testing.

Route 2: To upgrade and existing red trained operator card to a blue competent operator card.
This involves achieving an NVQ in plant operations in the desired category of plant and can either be done through the EWPA (experienced worker practical assessment) route or the OSAT (Onsite assessment) route, depending on level of experience. This will take approximately 2½ days plus 1 day to take the SPCS testing programme. The CPCS testing programme, consists of theory and practical elements.
Train to Gain funding may be available for the NVQ part of the programme and companies who pay levy to CITB may be eligible for grant for the testing programme.

Route 3: To enable an experience operator who does not have a red card to obtain a blue competent operator card without first gaining the red card
For a candidate who has at least 5 years practical experience on a specific item of plant, an NVQ in plant operations can be taken through either the EWPA or OSAT route and the CPCS testing programme taken to achieve a blue competent operator card.
Train to Gain funding may be available for the NVQ part of the programme and companies wo pay levy to CITB may be eligible for grant for the testing programme.
